Spring in Menorca
The weather in Menorca is generally quite temperate around this time, but in
early spring it can be a little unstable. Easter is always a popular holiday
time and whilst things are starting to warm up, beaches are for walking on
around now and not for spreading out on a sunlounger and the sea will certainly
be too cold for bathing. With a veritable wealth of flora and birdlife,
enthusiasts can easily cover the island to explore habitats of the migratory
and endemic species along the 200 km of coastline and rural hinterland. The
landscape at this time is unlike the other Balearic islands, rainfall is more
predominant in Menorca which produces emerald green pastures. The rolling hills
filled with flowers rival those of Mallorca. The real Menorca can only be found
on foot and a good guide will be an invaluable help to find countryside coves
that are simply, amazingly beautiful. For memorable
Menorca holidays - move into any of the Menorca villas
that we offer and enjoy it's stunning beauty with your
loved ones.
Summer in Menorca
Whilst generally regarded as a quiet island, during the
Menorca holidays, the larger beaches will be busier
though smaller, less sought after areas will always have a little hidden gem
where you can park the car up and stick the brolly in the sand. The summers are
hot, the pace of life is slow and the locals choose time of the year as the
hotspot for their fiestas. Late June sees the Fiesta of San Juan in Ciudadela.
This is the most spectacular festival with horse racing, jousting, dancing in
the streets, fireworks, and everyone stays up all day and all night. It has
been happening this way since the reign of Alfonso III in the late 13th
century. Many others take place across the island through out the season and
you will catch one if you're lucky. Looking for

Autumn in Menorca
The hoards have gone and the island resumes it's unhurried pace. Walking is
perfect at this time as it can be combined with bathing in the summer warmed
sea. This also a good time to do the sight seeing,
especially if you are staying in one of our Menorca
villas, in your own good time. As
the island is largely flat, this time of the year is ideal for cycling along
country lanes or maybe taking in round of gold on Menorca's one and only
course. Autumn is the perfect time for Menorca holidays.

Even though it is generally mild in the winter, the aforementioned activities
are best enjoyed in the warmer seasons. The northern wind is brisk and quite
cold. Still, there are some who still wish to hole
up in in one of Menorca villas and make their Menorca
holidays more special. The social scene is not as developed as Mallorca and Cyprus is certainly
warmer!
Menorca is to Mallorca as minor is to major, according to the Romans from whom
the present day name originated. Whilst similarities exist between the two,
they are undeniably unique and the school of thought that believes Menorca to
be wholly quieter and less touristy than Mallorca, should go back for a second
look. Menorca has generally resisted the onslaught of mass tourism quite well,
but larger resorts do exist for those who would
prefer busy Menorca holidays, as they do in Majorca. One of the most obvious
sites of the Menorcan landscape is the ubiquitous sight of low stone walls
which are a necessary characteristic to protect the means to protect the island
soil from being swept away from the strong Tramuntana (northerly wind) that
sweep across the island in the winter time. Less important now as most fields
lie fallow but the sheep are still thankful for them and can be seen in winter
months clustered behind these man made wind breaks in little woolly huddles.
The best way to spend get about the island is undoubtedly by car. The roads are
rarely busy and with a distance of only 47km to cover east/west, no where is
major trek. Best still is that there is so much to see and there are so many
opportunities to hop out of the car and study a prehistoric monument or wind
your way down to deserted beach. After all those
activities, Menorca villas are the ideal place to wind
up and relax.
Spend some time in the previous capital Ciutadella, the environs are quite built up but town square is one of the most
characteristic examples in the Mediterranean. Moorish influence dominates and
the town remains the ecclesiastical centre. Mahon to the east is where the
British established themselves and created the new capital. Evidence of
Georgian architecture and military embattlements are most prominent here, but
sash windows and smart maroon fronted buildings are plainly visible elsewhere
on the island. The British occupation also left it's mark in may other ways.
Gin is still distilled here, a smattering of local dialect has clearly has
Anglicised origin and Freisian cattle can be seen in the fields. The French
were here also, and during their occupation created Mayonnaise (Mahonesa),
invented by the amorous French Duke of Richelieu, who used it as an
aphrodisiac. Mahonesa translates as 'a girl from Mahon'. Cheese is Menorca's
famous export and it can readily be seen in the supermarkets of the other
Balearic islands. The centre of the island lends itself best to pasture land
and here is also the best place to source locally produced ceramics and leather
goods, not to mention a painting or two by local artists. Intense relief is not
a feature of the island and the highest "mountain" stands at 357m above sea
level, whilst the size may not be the most impressive, the view certainly is.
These are just a few of the many features that Menorca has to offer and it is
easy to see why so many wish to return again and again.
