Some of the prettiest corners of the island are the least accessible, typically at the top of a hill or mountain and perhaps the finest of all the off-beat villages is Orient, a stunningly attractive array of honey coloured houses nestling at the foot of a dark mountain, about 28km north east of Palma. The village is approached via a valley filled with meadows, flowers and happily grazing animals with the beauty and calm of the Tramuntana on either side and in parts up steep twisting mountain roads. The journey alone, through this outstandingly beautiful landscape makes the visit worthwhile. Suddenly the village appears almost from nowhere, a tiny cluster of houses nestle together on a hill with the church dominating the skyline. A walk through the village is a must before continuing on your journey through the mountains and valleys of this breathtaking part of the island. There are no shops or bars here though there are a few fine restaurants that attract patrons from far and wide. Bunyola and AlarĂ³ are 7km and 10km away respectively if the call of the wild wanes.
